Saros

A genuine PS5 showcase that will keep you up way past your bedtime.

9.0Score

The Gameplay: Pure Projectile Chaos

If you've played a Housemarque game before, you know they love a screen full of glowing death. Saros takes that "bullet-hell" philosophy and stretches it across a massive, haunting alien world called Carcosa. It's a third-person action game where movement is everything — you're constantly dashing and parrying through walls of neon projectiles. Thanks to the PS5's haptics, you can actually feel the "click" of your weapon's alt-fire recharging, which makes the combat feel incredibly tactile.

The Comparison: Where Does It Sit?

Think of Saros as the middle ground between Returnal and Control.

  • It has that tight, punishing combat loop of Returnal.
  • It captures the eerie, sci-fi mystery of Control.
  • However, it's much more generous with its progression than Returnal was. It feels a bit like Hades in that sense — even if you get absolutely flattened by a boss, you're usually bringing back enough "Lucenite" to the Passage (your home base) to make your next attempt a little easier.

How Long Is the Grind?

If you're just looking to see the credits roll on Arjun's story, you're probably looking at a roughly 18-hour investment. But if you're a completionist who wants to uncover every audio log and master every weapon variant, you could easily spend well over 45 hours in Carcosa. It's a meaty game that justifies the storage space.

Difficulty: Not Just a "Souls" Clone

The difficulty here is clever. It doesn't just throw you into the deep end; you can choose between Initiate, Standard, and Veteran settings right from the jump.

  • Standard is the intended experience — it's tough, and you will die, but it feels fair.
  • The real "secret sauce" is the Eclipse mechanic. The game actually watches how you're performing. If you're playing like a god, the world gets more aggressive and the "Eclipse" intensifies. If you're hitting a brick wall, the RNG might be slightly more forgiving with your next gear drop.

The Verdict

Saros is a genuine PS5 showcase. It's fast, gorgeous, and has that "just one more go" quality that'll keep you up way past your bedtime.

While the digital price is a bit of a gut-punch for Aussies at $124.95, it's a premier experience. Keep a sharp eye on our price tables below — we're already seeing physical copies listed for $99 at JB Hi-Fi, and that's where the real value is at launch.
